As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself,
unless it abides in the vine, neither can you,
unless you abide in me."
To remain, last, sustain, live, tarry and dwell.
In the present culture these words are rarely uttered or thought about much less acted out. Yes, there is a magazine called "Dwell" (one of my favorite to look at in the check out line at H.T.) and we may remain longer at the computer than we intend to. And I can affirm this cultural ethos in my own life as I have lived in seven different houses/apartments since graduating from Elon. The words I have used to describe my life have been transition, change, seasonal, and temporary.
In all of this there is a constant that the above verses speak of, Jesus. I have loved reading through John over the past couple of weeks. The story of Christ told by his most beloved disciple shows a relationship that had staying power and a true sense of abiding in Christ. I came to John 15 the other morning and was humbled, broken and raptured by the promises and proclamations Jesus makes in this chapter.
He is my constant, my dwelling place, and what sustains me.
